Chapter 11

Did I have a plan? This time I did. One that I thought even the ancient Greek spirit Dolos would approve of. Like I told Charlie, I was going after the Captain. Unfortunately, I wasn’t a God on this world. Even if the Sheriff had endorsed O’Malley’s actions by now, I couldn’t risk going after an Elf. The others wouldn’t stand for it. But the Druid? Powerful as he might be, he wasn’t at the top of the food chain like the Elves were. Close to it, but not the top. They didn’t know he was building his own power base in the background. Playing one side against the other without their knowledge. I, or more accurately, Robert, was the proof of that. If I could take him out of the picture, even the Sheriff might give pause..

As Sun Tzu said, attack the enemy when he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected. One advantage I had, thanks to what I’d learned about the Robert from this world, was that I did know who, and what, my enemy was. At the moment, O’Malley thought he had me on the run. That was his first mistake. But I needed to move fast. Shock and awe worked best when your opponent wasn‘t prepared for it. I’d start by taking out another one of his teams. That would make him nervous. He’d make preparations, maybe send out a few real warriors instead of half-rate mercenaries. I’d deal with them as well. When that happened, he’d expect me to come after him directly. He’d be right, in a fashion, and that would be his second mistake. Now I just needed to get all the pieces in place.

I had some time before Michael would arrive. Going out to the Willys. I retrieved my duffle and Taite’s satchel and brought them into the house. I wanted Michael to know I was going to war. From the stories he’d told, based on our time together in the army, he’d know what Robert was capable of. He’d probably also know his limitations. That was fine. I didn’t necessarily want to deceive him, but I did want him to think I could use a little help. Truth was, I needed some of his assets to make this work. That’s why I didn’t want Charlie here when he arrived. Better not to remind him of what Charlie was capable of.

I started laying a few things out on the table. The Fae sword and the blade of Monk Magnus that I’d killed the Empusa with were first. Both it and my sacred dagger were still stained with blood. I’d been too busy to clean them properly until now. I took a white linen cloth out of the duffle, dabbed it in a little jar of ancient oil, and began to polish the blades. Magical blades being what they were, I wasn’t worried about sharpening them.

When I was done, I laid the slightly blood-stained linen on the table. Then I pulled out the Sig and the Thunder Hammer and placed them next to the blades.
